• Finland – Land of a Thousand Lakes

Why "Land of a Thousand Lakes?? - Because there are 187 888 lakes in Finland, which makes "the land of a thousand lakes" some kind of an understatement. The whole Finland isn't filled with lakes, though. There is a region that we call Lake Finland (Finnish Lakeland in Wikipedia). In that region the existence of the lakes dominates the landscape and atmosphere. • National Anthem of Finland (Swedish Version) - "Vårt Land"

  • Finland National Anthem English lyrics

Maamme (Finnish) or Vårt land (Swedish) (Our Country), is the title of Finland's national anthem. There is no law on an official national anthem in Finland, but Maamme is firmly established by convention. The music was composed by the German immigrant Fredrik Pacius, with (original Swedish) words by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, and was performed for the first time on 13 May 1848. The original poem, written in 1846 but not printed until 1848, had 11 stanzas and formed the prologue to the great verse cycle The Tales of Ensign Stål ("Fänrik Ståhls Sägner"), a masterpiece of Romantic nationalism. The current Finnish text is usually attributed to the 1889 translation of Ensign Stål by Paavo Cajander, but in fact originates from the 1867 translation by Julius Krohn.[1][2] The Tales of Ensign Stål we...

Travel video about destination Finland. Finland is a land of a thousand lakes and eternal forests, a land of log cabins and Orthodox churches - a midsummer’s dream in the extreme north of Europe.Helsinki, ‘The Daughter of the Baltic’, ‘The Gibraltar of the North’, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, as a trading centre, in 1812 Tsar Alexander The First made it the capital of the Principality Of Finland. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country’s first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.

Winters are depressing, and Finland has long winters. Despite this, the finns have created one the most interesting countries of the world and you want to spend your holyday in Finland, be sure to check out this video. Learn, Share, Subscribe ------------------------------------------------ Watch the entire series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbZJ71IJGFRTa_XMM9a4hDh2Yo9CsZzOR Follow: https://plus.google.com/+blinder00 https://twitter.com/Sebastian2Go https://www.facebook.com/official7facts ------------------------------------------------ In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Finland. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is one of Northern Europe’s cosy and tranquil capitals. Where is Finland? It is a Baltic state, although geographically part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, with a language that’s related to both Estonian and Hungarian. More information about the video content bellow: 1. In Finland, traffic violation fines are based on the drivers’ incomes. In 2002, a Nokia executive was fined $103,000 for going 45 in a 30 zone. Another person was given 60,000$ for going 65 in a 50 zone. They know how to make people slow down over there. 2. Finns are the people with the highest consumption of coffee in the world, at 12 kilos per person per year. Across all age demographics, an impressive 14% of men and 6% of women reported consuming more than 10 cups of coffee per day! 3. Finns are the unquestioned champions of sauna!Think about it: 3.3 million saunas for 5.3 million people. More than one sauna for every other citizen. There are saunas everywhere in Finland: Every newer apartment is equipped with a sauna, all hotels, gyms and office buildings have them. 4. Finland has the most heavy metal bands per capita in the world. While Sweden and Norway have only 27 heavy metal bands per 100.000 inhabitants, Finland boasts double as much, 54 bands per 100.000. 5. Finlands educational system is the best in the world. It’s a system that goes against the evaluation-driven, centralized model that much of the Western world uses. They rarely take exams or do homework until they are well into their teens. The children are not measured at all for the first six years of their education. As a result the difference between weakest and strongest students is the smallest in the World. 6. 10 per cent of Finland is missing. Soviet soldiers invaded Finland during the Second World War. The Nordic country later struck back with a controversial ‘co-belligerency pact’ with Nazi Germany, in which the nations were not allies, but agreed to be fighting the same foe.The Finns fought the Soviet Union to a standstill on the border, but had to cede 10 per cent of their eastern territory, including the second largest city, Vyborg. Post-war Finland had to cope with the resettlement of hundreds of thousands of refugees from the lost lands. Finnish remained an official language of the Republic of Karelia (the Russian state that includes much of the lost land) until the 1980s. 7. The Finns invented the Molotov cocktail. At the onset of the Second World War, Stalin demanded to use Finnish territory for strategic purposes – he ordered that the Hanko Peninsula would serve as port for the Soviet Navy. The Finns refused, however, and Vyacheslav Molotov, the Soviet foreign minister, declared that it was ‘time for the soldiers’ to do the talking. Some 65 men, women and children died in the first bombing raid on Helsinki, while Molotov snidely remarked that Soviet aircraft were only dropping ‘food parcels’. Later in the war, Finnish troops returned the insult by hurling ‘Molotov cocktails’ at Soviet tanks. ●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩ENGLISH۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● Maamme (Finnish) or Vårt land (Swedish) ("our land") is the title of Finland's national anthem. The current Finnish text is usually attributed to the 1889 translation of Ensign Stål by Paavo Cajander, but in fact originates from the 1867 translation by Julius Krohn. The Tales of Ensign Stål were much appreciated throughout all of Scandinavia. Up until the time of Finland's independence in 1917--18, when the song began to be recognized as specifically applying to Finland, Pacius's tune and Runeberg's text were often also sung in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Note that in the original Swedish text there is no reference to Finland (except for in verses 4 and 10, which are rarely sung), only to a country in the north, but the Finnish text explicitly refers to Finland. The poem's theme is, furthermore, remarkably similar to that of the national anthems of Sweden (Du gamla, Du fria) and Norway (Ja, vi elsker dette landet). Some Finns have proposed that the Finnish national anthem be changed to Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, with lyrics by V.A. Koskenniemi (Finnish) and Joel Rundt (Swedish). There are also those who simply prefer Finlandia as a musical piece, although critics claim that it is difficult to sing.[citation needed] It is said that Pacius composed the tune in a mere fifteen minutes, with no idea that it would become so important to the people of Finland that they would eventually make it their national anthem. The tune of Maamme has similarities with the German drinking song Papst und Sultan. Many believe that Fredrik Pacius intentionally or unintentionally copied parts of the tune. Another Finnish patriotic song, Sotilaspoika, composed by Pacius, also includes similarities with Papst und Sultan. The melody of Maamme is also used for the national anthem of Estonia with a similarly themed text, Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm, My Fatherland, My Happiness and Joy (1869). It is also considered to be the national anthem for Livonians with text Min izāmō, min sindimō, My Fatherland, my native land.
